Minicoy Island Lakshadweep
has alluring beaches with facilities for
tourists including bathing huts, changing
rooms and water sports arrangements. Other
popular attractions of Minicoy Beach of
Lakshadweep are a lighthouse which is
300 feet tall, the lava dance and the
races between local boats called ‘Jahadhoni’.
The language spoken at Minicoy is Mahl a
form of Divehi, the language spoken in
Maldives. This language is a cousin of
Indo-Persian languages whose script is
written from right to left.
This Island of Lakshadweep is often
called Women’s Island as because of the
dominating position enjoyed by ladies in
the society has a culture distinct from
other islands. Here the village life has
been democratic perhaps even before the
words Democracy and Panchayat were known
to them.

festive occasions. One can have a visit to
the tuna canning factory, the light house
built by the British in 1885, and a long
drive through dense coconut groves and
winding village roads are part of the tour

largest lagoons.
People of Minicoy Island Beach are
seamen working in international shipping
companies. The pole and line tuna fishing
was practiced here even before it was
officially introduced. This island is a part
of the Coral Reef package with facilities to
accommodate staying tourists as well as day
tourists.
Best time to visit:
Minicoy is October to May.

By Air:
Cochin International Airport links
Lakshadweep with the mainland. Onward
flights from Cochin are also available to
most of the airports in India and to
selected foreign destinations.
By Ship:
you can get four passenger ships- MV
Tippu Sultan, MV Bharat Seema,
MV Amindivi, MV Minicoy and
M.V Kavaratti operate between Cochin and
Lakshadweep. The passage takes between 18 to
20 hours. The ships offer different classes
of accommodation. The ships have cafeteria
and snack bars, entertainment lounge, video
shows and upper-deck promenade etc.
